Easing into the Day

Sometimes I finally get around to buying something or other I need and it brings me an inordinate amount of pleasure. Take my new toaster for an example. I went toaster shopping with my teenager and she wanted one that was very sleek and stylish. It looked like this:

It was a good toaster but too Darth Vader for me. It made me remember how, when I had my first apartment in New York City all those years ago, I put in a black and white checked kitchen floor and wanted eveything to be either black, white or red. I was young and I liked the clean geometry and sharp colors.

We kept looking and I fell in love with this little baby:

Not nearly as impressive but I thought I could face it every morning while I eased into my day. It looked like a cloud to me. I'm not a big fan of anthropomorphic toasters in general but this one also reminded me of the Pillsbury doughboy or a tooth. Mostly a big fluffy cumulus cloud though.

I'm not exactly sure what all this means about the march of time (didn't want to say "getting older") but I can see that I've exchanged some of my hard edges for less exact boundaries. It's all good; we change and evolve continuously.

And to show you I haven't completely lost my edge, check out the racy kettle I just bought:

This color is called "cerise" which means cherry and the whistle on this baby could stop traffic.

Have you treated yourself to something simple lately that makes you inordinately happy? If not, do!

(Sketches are all done in acrylic except the two kettles left and center--pencil and marker.)

  1. Didn't know they still sold non-electric kettles! :-) Enjoy your new cloud toaster. As long as it makes toast I don't care - at six am I just don't care! I do love my mortar and pestle. Simple but so useful.

    1. I've been looking at buying a mortar & pestle for ages but in between forgeting to do so & finding ones that aren't quite right, I haven't. One of these days!

  3. Hi Jennifer! Thanks. Yes-- simple pleasures are the best.

  4. A toaster is a major purchase as far as I'm concerned! It's ALWAYS on the counter, so it has to be aesthetically pleasing. I like that sleek model, but for my future white kitchen, I have chosen a lime green model -- that I have to order from England, because I can't find four-slicers in Italy. Gotta have a four-slicer!

Love the cerise kettle, too. But even more, I love that you sketched and painted your appliances. :)

    1. You're so right-- these things count as we see them every day first thing. Lime green is worth sending away for, Renée! And with all your men around the house, I totally get the 4-slicer. :)

    2. Nuh-uh -- the four-slicer is for me!!!! I LOVE toast! (Except that they also don't have salted butter here, except for an expensive French import that is TOO salty. Oh, the trials and tribulations of an expat!)

    3. Ha! Isn't toast and tea the best-- especially when I don't feel like cooking. I live in Brittany which is the salty butter capitale of France. I'd mail you some if it wasn't perishable. They even make caramel here with salty butter & are well known for it. I *could* send you salty caramel or better yet salty caramel sauce that you can spread on your toast... but I think I'm losing focus here!

  5. I love your still life! And the colour, cérise!

@Renée, you'll need an adaptor for your plug if you buy an appliance from England ;)

    1. Thanks, Joanna!
And you know, it does get complicated with all these different volts! I hope Renée can work that out.

    2. I have a drawer full of adapters. Sigh.

  6. Love all the toaster art! I'm a toaster oven fan myself, still have the one I grew up with! I bought a beautiful chrome one at a yard sale to please my husband - he likes the toast to jump! Thanks for sharing all this - fun!

    1. Toaster ovens are great too, Julie. I think it was very nice of you to accommodate your husband's need for jumping toast! Thanks for stopping by. :)

  7. Loved this post. My guilty pleasure was buying a set of matching water glasses. I found the perfect ones for me at Crate and Barrel. They are recycled Mexican glass barely tinted blue. They are thick and hold the chill of ice cubes making them wonderful vehicles for ice water. I cannot express how much having a set of matching glasses has made me smile.

  8. I loved my French minimalist chrome toaster which could toast a baguette width. So much that I brought it to London from France. It fused. So I bought an English minimalist chrome toaster - fatter in width but still I loved the satin shine of the thing, so sleek, so simple. The thing is bread, especially seeded wholemeal is just not minimalist or controllable. A piece fell inside, the toaster started smoking and it blew the fuse. The whole house fused. Toaster number 2 lost this year. Still I yearn for another...

    1. Wow, Bridget. I never blew a fuse with a toaster before (although I have been know to blow a fuse ;) ). Guess your minimalist toaster means maximilist troubles. When you find the right one, you'll know. And hopefully you won't burn down the house with it! :)

  9. Fun to see your artwork and think of the joy a new thing can bring. I recently almost bought a clock (that was kind of ugly, but just because I needed one) when a friend said she had a clock I could have that she never used. She brought it to me the next day and it was so pretty I could hardly accept it, but she insisted and looking at it on my office shelf makes me very happy each day.

I wonder if your racy kettle is whistling at your cute cloud toaster? ;)

  10. Hi Kimi,
I'm glad you accepted your friend's clock. I know these are all just material possessions but it's nice to have reminders of good things around as we go through our day.

And you just may be right about that kettle making a play for the toaster-- I'll keep you posted if any little pink appliances pop up unexpectedly! :)
