Emotion

This is a character study for a picture book I wrote. It isn't definitive; I need to take it a lot further. What emotion do you think the girl's face and posture express? There is no right answer. I'd just like to know what you think.
Thanks!

  1. Nice! She looks like she's unhappy with someone else's decision and is determined to find a way around it. Then again, maybe I just like defiant characters :)

  2. Thanks, Stephanie. Me too! I like kids with power. And I like your take on it.

  3. Interesting painting! I'm peering at the eyes - kind of want to get closer to see more! The arms suggest defiance. Only tiny thing worrying me is the eyebrows of all things. A bit ambigous for me as they make her look slightly evil! Sharp sloping eyebrows descending to the nose, are useful for baddies and witches...Is she a witch child?

  4. You're right. The eyebrows bothered me too. She isn't evil but defiant is right on. So I'll need to calm down those eyebrows a bit! Thanks for looking, Bridget!

Wouhaou!

  15. oh my gosh Dana! LOVE your blog! I'm seeing this girl looking very angry at something that an adult (?) said to her. that's what went through my mind.

  16. Really like this painting. I think she is fed up - annoyed rather than angry. You've captured a powerful expression - not easy to do.

  18. I realize I am weighing in late in the commenting process. I like the drawing. I think the girl is showing both vulnerability and strength...she is taking a stand and what's the other person to meet her requirement.
